WordPress Missing Blocks? Episode #1 – The Tabs Block!

YouTube video

So yeah, “Missing Blocks” – let me explain

In default/core WP there are a set of blocks – and here they are: https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/blocks-list/

Now, to build a straightforward site, believe it or not, these are literally all you need – really.

Though many folk complain it isn’t enough – and when coming from other page builders they wonder where the heck are some of the blocks they’re used to using.

Even WordPress.com thinks there should be more and include them in JetPack ,see here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/

And of course, all the Block Page Builders and block frameworks have a shed load of extra blocks too – checkout the repo and you’ll see what I mean.

Now, I’m talking about “regular-type” blocks – not dynamic, data-driven stuff or fancy display stuff like timeline – just straight web elements you could consider to be standard – and it should be noted that literally ALL the Block-based Page Builders have something that is totally missing from core and that is the ability to set responsive spacing at different screen sizes (for devices) – and that is the biggest shortcoming of core in my opinion and puts FSE at a huge disadvantage. Stay tuned for my solution on that, coming to this channel soon!

But this series is not about the responsive issue, its about only about missing blocks

I actually agree that there are a few that missing from core, or some that fall short – for example the Gallery Block just doesn’t do what you would expect – it’s just a collection of images, there’s no pop up where you can scroll through the images you can’t even control the “aspect ratio” of the items in the gallery grid! – check out my Vid about how to overcome this shortfall and get a proper gallery.

Anyway! Missing Blocks!

So I thought I’d start a mini series where I look at those “regular type” blocks that are considered to be “missing” and find solutions for that.

Right then… Episode #1 is “Where’s the missing Tabs Block!”

Defo one that should 100% be a core/default block – I tried every Tabs Block plugin on the repo – no dice – and I’m certainly not going to install a full on Block Page Builder just for the tabs so I thought – come on, let’s build our own!

I’ll show you how I got that sorted with core Blocks, a little CSS and a teenie tiny bit of Javascript – and stay tuned till later in this tutorial for a bonus tip/technique to create vertical tabs too!

So here we go… The missing Tabs Block!
