So yesterday, I released a video all about the new WordPress version, WordPress 6.9 — a full review including the (almost perfect) new Accordion Block. If you haven’t seen that, go and check that out here. It’s an awesome new release, pretty heavy on the developer side of things, but still very welcome and super great for another epic progression for the WordPress platform. Yeah, check out the new AI stuff coming to WordPress; it’s going to be pretty mind-blowing, I’ve got to be honest.
Anyway, in that video, I presented one of the very few new blocks included in the 6.9 release, which is the brand new Accordion Block, which is, of course, very welcome, although I did note that it does have just a couple of shortcomings. Plus, it is a classic example of just how important it is to know exactly how you should be styling core blocks as part of your global theme setup in the Full Site Editor.
One of the shortcomings was that you can’t actually change the open/close icon, which really limits your options on design if you are a straight-up website creator rather than a developer. The other, maybe not so critical, shortcoming is that on virtually any accordion component on any modern website, there’ll also be a little bit of animation as you open and close the different panels of the accordion.
So, in this WordPress tutorial for the brand new WordPress 6.9 Accordion block, I want to show you how easy it is to add different icons for the open and close icon, as well as getting in some rather slick, subtle animations when those panels open and close.
