There’s not much I don’t like about WordPress Block Themes – I use the Full Site Editor and Gutenberg everyday to build websites for my clients.
And Block Patterns, one of the cornerstones of the new block theme world we now live in are amazing, you can do so many awesome things with them.
But… there’s one thing that bugs me!
When you go into the pattern library on a page, you’ll see all the patterns that come with the theme or the patterns from your custom theme. But by default, WordPress shows all the patterns from the wordpress.org site, from the pattern repository.
This is a bit nuts because if you’ve built out a beautiful custom site or you’re using a beautiful theme, why would you allow your users to choose completely random patterns that have nothing to do with your website?
It doesn’t make sense. I can see the logic, essentially a way for users to look through a whole library, similar to Elementor or Spectra or any of the other page builder plugins. But, I’ve never seen the point of having massive libraries of website parts/sections etc that have got zero to do with your design – crazy!
So yeah, my view is let’s get rid of them!
In this Block Theme tutorial we’ll use a really easy code snippet that we can slide into our themes to make sure that we keep control of those random patterns.
