Make your website faster with this simple WordPress trick!
So, it’s block theming, again! And if you’re into a bit of that, you will or should have come across a spectacular plug-in that makes creating custom block themes or child block themes an absolute no-brainer for WordPress. It’s a bit like a compiler that takes all the edits you’re making in the site editor and packages it all up into a brand new theme. Anyway, this isn’t a straight tutorial about Create Block Theme- there’s a vid on the way showing how I use Create Block Theme to make all my custom client block themes – pinky promise 🙂
The Create Block Theme plugin has a super cool feature whereby you can select font’s from Google, the plugin will download them and bakes them right in to your theme – epic! Thing is, I’ve one little gripe, and that is the file sizes of the font files – they’re huge!
One of the greatest things about block themes is their speed – 95+ score on Google Page Speed insights for performance if you do things right – and there is no question: block themes are heads and shoulders faster than regular WordPress classic themes.
So when we’re talking about speed optimisation, we’ve got to get our font sizes smaller. As great as Create Block Theme is (and it is amazing!), the font files are in TTF format – that’s probably the biggest file type you could possibly get and that just won’t do!
In this WordPress tutorial I show you how to get your web fonts 95% smaller for a faster website, better Core Web Vitals and a greener web.
